The latest news and developments from Daval

Daval, the fitted furniture specialist, is celebrating 30th years in business this week. The Huddersfield-based firm, which earlier in the year launched its truly unique Option-I technology, that allows Daval manufacture semi-bespoke furniture. The family-run firm invested over £1.5 million to be the first to bring the new manufacturing system to the industry.

The Option-I software contradicts all traditional manufacturing principles by producing customised furniture, on mass. Unlike previous manufacturing practices, Option-I encompasses all the steps in the process, from when the customer places the order, to the packaging of the finished products.

On examination of the market, Daval saw the increasing ‘scavenger’ trend emerging, as consumers were seeking out more tailor-made and one-off solutions for their homes. Daval has capitalised on this trend by creating a manufacturing solution to individually make furniture to order.

The customer requirements are treated individually – allowing changes to shapes, sizes, angles and finishes. The software specifies all the machines on the factory floor to process one order at a time, instead of producing different products in batches. This provides the customer with consistent and tailor-made furniture, matching their individual specification.

Daval, who sells its products through independent retailers, has witnessed the market flooded with European manufacturers for decades. With the Europeans’ ‘designer’ looks at high street prices, British manufacturing in this sector has been put under threat and Daval needed to innovate in order to compete.

Daval chairman, David Bodsworth commented: “Daval is proud of its British heritage and throughout the 30 years of trading, we have always been committed to investing in technology to ensure that we stay at the forefront of manufacturing in this sector. We are delighted to be the first in the UK to bring this to our customers. Daval has led the market in terms of design, innovation, quality and customer satisfaction, and now our Option-I manufacturing process means that we’re pushing the boundaries in this area too.”

No job at Daval has been lost to a machine. The people-focused company has retrained and redeployed staff to other areas of the business.
