Staying in is the new going out and our retailers have told us that this is particularly relevant to the over 50’s. Since the recession we have learnt that many people with a disposable income have decided that investing in their homes for the future, and perhaps for their family, is more rewarding than the lowly return on their bank savings.
Christine Prest, owner of the Lynden Design Studio, York, has noticed a huge surge in sales among the over 50’s in the last 12 months, she says: “There has been much more interest in traditional kitchens, and this is a reflection of the more mature customers that are buying with us.
“Some of our customers who haven’t been aware of how the kitchen market has evolved are amazed at the choices available now, especially with the Option-I technology. They realise they can have a dream kitchen without the restrictions of small, awkward spaces. They also like how they can tailor storage spaces to fit their specific needs. Gone are the days of unorganised pan draws, now we have weightless lift-out cupboards, peg-boards to keep cutlery in order, our best seller, the Le Mans Corner Unit and easy to use spacious recycling solutions.”
Christine is currently planning to change her showroom display to suit her current customer base. Gone are the stark lines, neutral palettes and modern finishes of recent years and in are traditional looking country kitchens, freshened up and modernised with flashes of colour.
Customers are using advances in design to make sure that their living space benefits their lifestyle. Work surfaces built at a lower height; pull out weightless draws and swing out and weightless corner units all help to eliminate any unnecessary lifting, bending, reaching and stretching.
Simon Bodsworth, Business Development and Marketing Manager, Daval, said: “I think many people are investing more money and time in choosing furniture because they want their homes to start working for them. In last few years people have renovated their homes to sell, not to live in, and rooms such as the kitchen have not been built to purpose.
“When designing a kitchen a main priority for us is to make it easy to use, well designed and personalised. We plan our kitchens under Dynamic Space by Blum where by we focus on the five working zones: consumables, non-consumables, cleaning, preparation and cooking. We then apply inspirational and dedicated storage solutions that deliver up to 55% more storage space.”
Daval has recently launched the Vintage Colour Collection, five sumptuous shades that can be mixed and matched with Natural Wood to create country kitchen look with a fabulous contemporary twist. This collection has extended Daval’s painted collection to 14
